WBA Curriculum

Academic Program Overview

Each student at Windsor Bergen Academy receives an extensive and comprehensive education based on his/her Individualized Education Program (IEP) in accordance with NJ Administrative Code 6A:14. Our curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, as well as each student’s individual learning path. We infuse technology across the curriculum to enhance the learning process and allow students to interact with the global learning community.

Instructional methodologies are research based, differentiated, and prescriptive. We employ best practices and ongoing assessment to ensure high-quality instruction. Every student receives a baseline reading and mathematics assessment to determine their instructional levels. Benchmark assessments are administered throughout the year to measure each student’s progress. We are a state-approved testing site for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments.

Multisensory instruction gives children more than one way to make connections and learn concepts. Multisensory teaching conveys information through tactile and kinesthetic elements, as well as sight and hearing.

Science

 .... let’s think like scientists... ask the right questions and explore the wonders of the world around us

A fun way for our students to learn science is through hands on experiments, interactive activities, and real-world applications. Critical thinking skills are explored in a fun, collaborative way.   The curriculum provides opportunities for students to communicate their findings and ideas through presentations, reports, and discussions. Our students showcase their science projects to our families and friends at our annual Science Fair.  National Geographic and Pearson Science are supplemented with other inquiry-based resources such as Mystery Science.

Social Studies

...explore the past, present, and future of human civilization

Our program provides students with a foundation in history, geography, civics, and economics.  The interactive TCI program provides an understanding of the world, history, and its diverse cultures as we explore the concept of global citizenship and the interconnectedness of the world and our communities.  Students are guided in discussions about current and past events related to the significance of what they are learning.

Health

...healthy choices today lead to a brighter tomorrow

 

The Kids Health curriculum emphasizes the goal of promoting the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of our students to help them develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to make healthy choices throughout their lives.

Reading

... the passport to countless adventures and endless knowledge

Our students are exposed to Wilson learning, as well as Edmark and the Houghton Mifflin Reading curriculum.  Students are taught the essential components of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Core reading materials include decodable texts, children's literature, informational texts and novels.

Language Arts and Writing

... the key that unlocks the door to imagination and self-expression

The five-step writing process is implemented school wide. Prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.  Each of these steps help our students create a piece of writing in a systematic and organized approach. The process allows teachers to conference with each student and provide feedback and support at each stage, helping our students stay focused and produce well-structured writing.

Students begin to develop foundational grammar skills that lay the groundwork for their understanding of the English language. Parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, verb tenses, adjective agreement are just a few of the grammar skills that are built upon as students' progress. These grammar skills are essential in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of our young students' writing.

HMH Into Reading program is implemented in all classes in addition to supplemental online resources. 

Mathematics

... It gives us hope that every problem has a solution

Our mathematics program ensures that every learner can achieve at their level. This multimodal approach utilizes baseline data and assessments that build mathematical fluency and proficiency. Our differentiated approach is based on student needs and abilities which ensures a logical progression of skills and concepts.  Targeted intervention helps students who are struggling with certain concepts and need additional support and practice.  This leveled approach also accelerates instruction for those students who can progress at a faster pace.

Touch Math and other online resources are infused in our HMH Into Math program.

World Language

... The more you read, the more you know, the more you learn, the more places you'll go

Take your passport and travel the world.  Students will explore diversity with a monthly visit to a different country. Passport booklets include each country’s flag, government, map, culture, language, history, and facts. Duolingo is a fun application used to learn multiple languages while visiting our countries.

BEYOND THE ACADEMICS

WILSON READING SYSTEM

Wilson Reading System teaches concepts through the manipulation of sound, syllable, and word elements. This program is used as our primary approach to phonics for those who need additional support in reading and spelling skills. This program aligns with the guidelines for the International Dyslexia Association.

Touch Math

Touch Math teaches mathematical concepts through visualization and touch. Our students have fun with this multisensory approach to math.

Keyboarding Without Tears

Keyboarding Without Tears teaches the developmental sequence of keyboarding through multisensory lessons for computer and digital readiness skills. We prepare our students with computer skills necessary to succeed on the NJSLA.

Handwriting Without Tears

Handwriting Without Tears teaches printing and cursive writing that support multiple learning styles. It adheres to the principles of motor learning, student engagement and developmental theory.

Edmark

Edmark is a highly repetitive site word approach used for students who need an alternative to phonics-based instruction.

IXL

IXL is a web-based learning tool offering unlimited practice in all subject areas across the curricula. The program is adaptive and progresses based on the students’ understanding of the material. An individualized learning path is designed for each student, creating activities for enrichment and remediation. Parents can access student results and monitor progress from home.
